Aly was woken up when she felt McKayla slip out from underneath her. “Where are you going?” she asked drowsily, leaning back against the pillow. “I’m just thirsty,” McKayla shrugged, “Do you need anything?” Aly shook her head and watched McKayla carefully. Something was up with her, Aly could just tell. “Are you feeling okay?” Aly asked. McKayla swallowed and rubbed her eyes, “I guess.” “You don’t look so good,” Aly said, trying to get the truth out. “My head hurts, but it’s not a big deal,” McKayla said. “Come here and lay down with me,” Aly said, opening her arms which McKayla immediately walked into. “How are you?” McKayla asked Aly. “A little better, but I still don’t feel great,” Aly admitted. McKayla nodded and put one of her legs in between Aly’s before resting her chin on the crook Aly’s neck and burying her face in her hair. Aly could feel the heat radiating off her body and, despite the fact that McKayla felt really hot, she was shivering uncontrollably. “I made you sick,” Aly said sadly. “I’ve been sick for a while now actually,” McKayla admitted, but she never moved to look at Aly. “You have?” “I just didn’t want to deal with doctors, it smells there, and so I didn’t say anything,” McKayla explained. “You can’t do that, you could be really sick,” Aly said. “I’m fine Aly, it’s just a cold,” McKayla said. “It’s a cold this time, but what if it’s worse next time?” Aly asked. “Why are you so worried about this anyway?” McKayla asked. “I just don’t want to ever lose you,” Aly whispered, brushing her hand on McKayla’s forehead. She could tell almost instantly that it wasn’t just a little cold. “You need to go to the nurse,” Aly told her. “No,” McKayla whined, pushing herself even more into Aly, if that was possible. “Mac, baby, you have to,” Aly said. “Fine,” McKayla grumbled.
Aly leaned against the wall as the nurse took McKayla temperature and asked her about a million questions. “Have you been coughing?” she asked. “No, not much,” she answered, but just when she finished her sentence she coughed. And once it started, it wouldn’t stop. “Here, have some water,” the nurse said. McKayla took the cup and tried to drink some of the water, but every time she thought she had finished coughing it started back up again. She looked around the room with a hint of panic in her eyes and Aly quickly pushed herself off the wall. “Mac, what’s wrong?” she asked, trying to hide her concern. But Mac didn’t reply, instead she just kept staring forward. Aly looked around to see what it may be, but there wasn’t anything in the room or the hall. “McKayla?” she tried again. And then she started to twitch. At first it was just her index finger and then her hand, then her arm, until her knees buckled and she was on the floor. “What’s wrong with her?” Aly asked, she didn’t care about hiding her concern anymore. “I don’t know,” the nurse admitted, “I’m going to dial an ambulance.” “Can’t you do something?!” Aly yelled. “I can’t magically stop a seizure,” the nurse said, “I’m sorry.” Aly froze at the sound of that word. It was bad, really bad. She and the nurse both knelt by McKayla side until she went completely limp, and started to gasp. “Just take deep breaths,” the nurse instructed McKayla, who was looking around the room as the paramedics came in.
“What’s happening?” she asked frantically, but no one stopped to explain. She grabbed Aly’s arm, “What’s going on?” “They just have to make sure everything is alright,” Aly said. McKayla grip tightened and Aly could feel her nails digging into her skin and see the fear on McKayla’s face. “You need to stay here,” Mihai told Aly, everyone had left the gym to see what the commotion had been. “No, I want Aly,” McKayla said, pulling Aly into her. “Sorry but-“ Mihai started. “No! She’s mine!” McKayla snapped. “She can’t go with you,” Marta said flatly. “Please, I need her,” McKayla begged. Aly looked at Marta, who shook her head. “I wish I could,” she said. And that’s when she started to cry; actually it was more like sobbing. Aly tried to shake McKayla off of her so she could go because she knew that she wouldn’t be able to watch her like this for much longer. “Aly! Don’t go!’ McKayla pleaded and she threw her arms around Aly’s waist. Aly’s heart shattered and now she was crying too. She looked and Marta who nodded, signaling that yes, Aly could go with McKayla.
An hour, that’s how long Aly had to wait before a doctor came out and called her into the room. “It’s not anything serious,” he said, “She had a viral infection and it got into her bloodstream, that’s what caused the seizure. I have some medicine and I want her to stay the night here, just so that we can make sure it isn’t anything more serious.” Aly nodded, “Will she be okay to come back?” “Definitely not this week, but her gymnastics shouldn’t be effected by this at all,” the doctor said, “I’ll leave you two alone.” Aly almost ran up to McKayla and threw herself into her. “You’re insane!” she cried, squeezing the life out of Mac. “Aly,” she squeaked. “No, I don’t want to hear it. You could have been really sick,” Aly scolded, leaning back to look into McKayla’s eyes. “I’m so sorry,” McKayla whispered. “It’s not your fault, but never do that again.” “I won’t,” McKayla said. “You scared me so much,” Aly said, wrapping Mac up in another hug.
Aly couldn’t remember when she fell asleep but there she was, kneeling by the bed with her head near McKayla’s stomach, her nose touching her belly button. And when she felt McKayla shift Aly was awake. You wouldn’t have known anything had happened if you had only seen her today. After just one day Aly finally got her McKayla back. The McKayla who would laugh at everything and call anyone her best friend, the one who had posted millions of selfies and danced around no matter how crazy she may seem. “You get to go home today,” Aly said with a smile as she watched McKayla grab her phone. “Come here!” McKayla said, patting the spot on the bed next to her. Aly sat and wrapped her arms around Mac’s waist. She smiled and heard a click. And then they both turned to face each other, and there’s another click. Their foreheads touch and there it goes again. And finally, their lips touched and there was a click.
Both girls smiled at each other when they saw the picture and McKayla posted it without hesitating. “You sure you want to do that?” Aly asked. “Of course,” McKayla said confidently. “I love that picture,” Aly said. “Mmm, me too,” McKayla agreed. “It’s perfect,” Aly whispered, pecking McKayla’s cheek. “But not as perfect as you,” McKayla whispered back.
